White elephant game ideas: 6 twists to try
Change one rule and the whole game feels different. Try a speed round (gifts freeze after one steal), no-limit chaos, steal-backs allowed, no last swap, a theme, or naming each gift as it's opened. The page below starts on the speed round.

The six twists
- Speed round. A gift freezes after one steal. Every gift moves at most once, so 12 players finish in about 16 minutes. Set: freeze after 1.
- Chaos. Gifts never freeze. Great for small groups; with a big group, set a time limit. Set: Never.
- Steal-backs allowed. Turn off "No stealing straight back" and let two people fight over the same gift. Pair it with a steal limit.
- No last swap. Turn off player 1's last swap so number 1 has to live with their first pick.
- A theme. Everyone brings something red, something made locally, or a regift from home. The rules stay the same.
- Name every gift. Type what each gift is as it's opened. The board then reads like a scoreboard, and the final list shows who went home with what.
Times assume about a minute per opening and 20 seconds per steal, our rough guess; a chatty group is slower.
Questions people ask next
What's the best white elephant twist for a big group?
The speed round: freezing a gift after one steal keeps a 30-person game to about 40 minutes.
How do you make white elephant more fun?
Allow steals, pick a steal limit that fits the group, and give player 1 the last swap so the end is a real moment.
Can I combine twists?
Yes. A theme works with any steal limit, and every house rule here can be switched on or off before you draw.
